Very dangerous, but many people don't know

Eggs are a common food item that most families always have in their refrigerator. Eggs are versatile, quick to cook, and widely used. However, social media has often spread concerns about fake eggs or eggs contaminated with bacteria, causing confusion among many. One common occurrence is boiled eggs turning greenish around the yolk. While less common, eggs turning pink can also happen.

Why do boiled eggs turn pink?
Social media has circulated images of boiled eggs with pink yolks. This phenomenon isn’t "magic" but is often due to the presence of the bacterium Pseudomonas.

Also known as the green-pus bacillus, Pseudomonas can cause various infections, especially in hospital settings. These include pneumonia, urinary tract infections, meningitis, and, in severe cases, septicemia (blood poisoning).

Typically, eggshells have a tightly sealed structure that makes it difficult for bacteria to penetrate. The Pseudomonas bacteria are usually found in chicken feces, not inside the egg. However, if the eggshell has cracks or has been damaged by washing, the bacteria can enter and multiply inside. When such eggs are boiled, the yolk may turn pink. This phenomenon is generally not dangerous if the egg does not have any unusual odors.

Why do boiled egg yolks turn green?
Have you ever noticed the yolk of a boiled egg turning green? This is particularly common for those who prefer their eggs well-done. The green color results from a reaction between iron in the yolk and sulfur in the egg white.

When eggs are overcooked or boiled for too long, this reaction is intensified, leading to the greenish layer around the yolk. The longer the egg is boiled, the more prominent the green color becomes.
